Ragnar Hjalmarsson is a PhD candidate at the Hertie School of Governance. His research centers on how democratic political institutions respond to economic collapse. Concretely, the range of paths taken by post-crisis states in their use of transitional justice mechanisms such as truth reports, trials, reparations and constitutional reform. Prior to joining Hertie, Ragnar worked for the International Monetary Fund, the peacebuilding organization Conciliation Resources and, prior to that, for the Icelandic foreign service. He holds degrees in politics from the London School of Economics and Political Science and University of Iceland.
