The public event “Beyond the Silicon Valley: Towards a European Digital Public Sphere” on Friday evening will take place in Hall 2 of the Zeche Zollverein site, located close to the pedestrian entrance on the left (Map).
On Saturday evening, the “European Salon” will take place at Grillo Theater in the city center of Essen. A shuttle bus will bring you from the conference venue to the theatre. Please note that most of this public event will be in German.
Participants will be accommodated at Motel One, Essen. A shuttle bus will be provided for transportation to and from the conference venue.
You can reach the hotel from Essen Main Station either by taxi or by a 10-minute walk. For the latter option, exit the train station in direction of the city center/Willy-Brandt-Platz and walk straight along the pedestrian zone until you reach the Essen Cathedral on your right side. Turn left here through Kardinal-Hengsbach-Platz and walk up the stairs where you will find Motel One just to your left.
Restaurants & Bars
If you are looking for a place to round off the evening with drinks in the area close to your hotel, we offer these recommendations:
- Temple Bar, Salzmarkt 1 – low-key bar with cozy interior (no food)
- Seitenblick, Trentelgasse 2 – “pub-esque” restaurant with native cuisine
In case you arrive early on Friday, we recommend the following lunch options:

Those arriving on Thursday, Oct. 19, have the exceptional opportunity to attend a reading by Orhan Pamuk (in German) at the cinema Lichtburg, Kettwiger Str. 36, at 20:00h. Please let us know as soon as possible if you’re interested in taking part in this evening.
There is also a wonderful retrospective of the work of Alexander Kluge, a filmmaker, scholar and writer, to be discovered at Museum Folkwang, right next to the Institute of Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI), Museumsplatz 1.
